Gamepad mode makes the controller behave like a standard gamepad, flipping between individual menu items with the direction pad or left thumbstick. It isn't quite as solid as the Xbox One Wireless Controller, but it's comfortably sturdy and doesn't have any of the wiggly or loose mechanical parts that can ruin cheap gamepads.Ī three-way toggle switch on the bottom of the controller turns it on and switches between gamepad and mouse modes. The back of the box holds an Ethernet port, an HDMI port, and a power connector for the included wall adapter. It's mostly black, with a blue power button on the lower right corner of the top panel, and a nonfunctional red nub on the front. The GEM Box is even smaller than streaming media devices like the Roku 3 ($306.98 at Amazon UK) (Opens in a new window) or the Apple TV ($306.98 at Amazon UK) (Opens in a new window), at 1.0 by 3.3 by 3.3 (HWD) inches. At $99.99 it's certainly affordable, but even at that price it's incredibly underpowered and clunky to use, and reminds us why the category has failed to find a foothold in the market.
